Who can apply: You must meet every criterion. You must not hold Japanese citizenship. You must be enrolled as of April 2027, or applying for a course starting April 2027, at a graduate school in Japan; people already enrolled, not yet enrolled, and currently employed are all eligible, and students entering in autumn 2027 may also… What is funded: A monthly, non-repayable scholarship for non-Japanese students enrolling in a Japanese graduate school for a master’s or doctoral degree from April 2027. The rate is set by the shortest period needed to finish the degree: JPY 230,000 per month for a one or two year degree, JPY 210,000 per month for a three year… Deadline: 31 October 2026 (the online application system runs from 1 September 2026 to 31 October 2026). Round: Scholarship 2027. Who can apply
- You must meet every criterion. You must not hold Japanese citizenship. You must be enrolled as of April 2027, or applying for a course starting April 2027, at a graduate school in Japan; people already enrolled, not yet enrolled, and currently employed are all eligible, and students entering in autumn 2027 may also apply. Enrolment duration to graduation must be longer than 12 months. Applicants for a PhD must start the doctoral course by age 35, and applicants for a master's must start by age 30, with no exceptions. You must be able to hold a basic conversation in Japanese, because interviews are conducted in Japanese with no exceptions, although the research plan may be submitted in English if you are not confident in Japanese. Students on a professional graduate course are in principle not eligible unless they can submit a research plan. Recipients may not hold another scholarship except MEXT, the Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship, a JSPS International Fellowship, an approved JST fellowship or a JICA scholarship, and may not take employment beyond study-related part-time work such as TA, RA, translation or interpreting.

Submit the online application, a face photo, a required two-minute video about your research plan, an undergraduate academic transcript and a research proposal on the foundation's Word template.
