Who can apply
- The applicant must hold an MD, PhD or equivalent and be at the beginning of an academic career, defined as at least two years of postdoctoral fellowship and no more than seven years since completing formal training, and must not hold an academic rank of Associate Professor or above. Awards are restricted to investigators living and working legally in the United States or one of its territories, and the research must be done at a United States institution of higher learning or a federal or state scientific or health care agency, so an applicant based outside the United States cannot use this scheme. Nationality itself is not restricted. Applicants must not be a current or former principal investigator on an NIH research project grant or career development award, although holders of T32, F30, F31 and F32 awards stay eligible. No application fee.
