Who can apply: Enrolled upper-level undergraduate or graduate students, postdoctoral trainees, or anyone within one year of completing either, in the life, physical, health, engineering, computer or social sciences, mathematics and related fields. Students enrolled in English, journalism or other non-technical communications fields… What is funded: A ten-week summer placement at a media organisation in the United States, where the fellow works as a journalist reporting science. Who can apply

  • Enrolled upper-level undergraduate or graduate students, postdoctoral trainees, or anyone within one year of completing either, in the life, physical, health, engineering, computer or social sciences, mathematics and related fields. Students enrolled in English, journalism or other non-technical communications fields are not eligible, although students on science journalism programmes may be eligible if they also hold a STEM degree. CITIZENSHIP BARRIER, READ THIS FIRST: applicants must be United States citizens or already hold visas that allow them to receive payment for work during the summer, and AAAS states it cannot assist in obtaining or retaining visas. The fellowship is open to international students already studying in the United States on such a visa, and to US citizens studying abroad who can pay their own way back for the summer. There is no route into this fellowship from outside the United States. Successful applicants must attend an orientation at AAAS headquarters in early June and a wrap-up session in mid-August.
