NEF Research Grant Programme

Who can apply: Nationals of one of 27 Asia-Pacific developing countries listed by NEF (Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Fiji, Indonesia, Kiribati, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Maldives, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nauru, Nepal, Palau, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Thailand… What is funded: Up to JPY 1,000,000 for one individual, fieldwork-based conservation research project lasting one to two years. Covers field consumables, local travel, reference materials and field assistants. It does not cover salary, tuition, international travel or conference fees. Deadline: 14 October 2026, 10:00 JST. Round: Second 2026 round (projects starting from or after February 2027).

Who can apply

• Nationals of one of 27 Asia-Pacific developing countries listed by NEF (Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Fiji, Indonesia, Kiribati, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Maldives, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nauru, Nepal, Palau, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, Vietnam). India, China and Pakistan are NOT on that list. You must be either a full-time doctoral student enrolled in one of those countries, or a researcher with at least three years of research experience working full time at an institution there, and the fieldwork must happen in the country where you work or study. Individual projects only, no team projects.
