Who can apply: The project scientist must be a national of one of NEF’s 27 Asia-Pacific target countries (Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Fiji, Indonesia, Kiribati, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Maldives, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nauru, Nepal, Palau, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka… What is funded: Research expenses of up to JPY 1,500,000 per project, with the project coordinator’s travel and overheads paid separately, so the package runs to JPY 2,500,000. The work is done under a mentor at a Japanese research institution, either in the applicant’s own country or in Japan. Deadline: 31 January 2027. The funder does not state a timezone for this deadline, so check the official page for the exact cut-off time. Round: Second 2026-27 round.

Who can apply

  • The project scientist must be a national of one of NEF's 27 Asia-Pacific target countries (Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Fiji, Indonesia, Kiribati, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Maldives, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nauru, Nepal, Palau, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, Vietnam) and under 40. India, China and Pakistan are not on that list. Two routes: Qualification A, a researcher with a PhD or three years of research experience working in one of those countries; or Qualification B, a student already enrolled in, or applying for admission to, a PhD course at a Japanese university. A project coordinator in Japan must agree to mentor you before you apply.
