Who can apply: Current graduate students in an accredited PhD programme who have passed the qualifying exam or spent at least a year in the primary mentor’s lab. MSTP and dual MD/PhD students do not qualify, and applicants may not already hold a terminal degree. The applicant must be an active ASN member (Student category, which ASN… What is funded: USD 30,000 per year for up to two years, paid to the fellow’s institution and usable only for stipend support, beginning 1 July of the award year. Recipients also join the ASN Kidney STARS programme, which provides USD 1,500 in travel support for an in-person meeting plus complimentary Kidney Week registration. Deadline: 19 November 2026. Round: 2027 award year.

Who can apply
- Current graduate students in an accredited PhD programme who have passed the qualifying exam or spent at least a year in the primary mentor's lab. MSTP and dual MD/PhD students do not qualify, and applicants may not already hold a terminal degree. The applicant must be an active ASN member (Student category, which ASN provides free to students and PhD candidates) when the cycle closes, and the sponsor and any co-sponsors must be active ASN members too. Maximum two applications per sponsor per cycle, and a minimum 75 per cent time commitment to research.
Stage dates
Award activates 1 July of the award year. The portal shows as closed until the cycle opens; the closing date is published in the 2027 grant rules.19 November 2026
