You must also identify with a group AGA counts as traditionally… What is funded: Six summer undergraduate research fellowships of USD 6,200 each, paid as a stipend for ten weeks of mentored research on digestive disease under a gastroenterology or hepatology investigator. Mentor labs may also receive USD 1,000 to offset hosting costs where justified. Recipients work full time for the ten weeks… Deadline: 3 February 2027 (applications open 7 October 2026). Who can apply
- Restricted by geography and by background. You must be in good academic standing and enrolled in an undergraduate programme in North America leading to a bachelor's degree, and continuing in the following autumn, so graduating seniors cannot apply. You must also identify with a group AGA counts as traditionally underrepresented in biomedical research: specified racial and ethnic groups, individuals with disabilities, or individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds meeting two or more criteria that are defined against United States programmes such as the Federal Free and Reduced Lunch Program, Federal Pell grants and the WIC supplemental nutrition programme. You must secure a research mentor who is an AGA member and who confirms their institution will let an un-enrolled undergraduate work in the lab. You may not hold a similar salary-support award from another agency such as the American Liver Foundation, the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation or the NIH, and the award is not salary support for laboratory technicians. Past recipients may reapply.

The only binding date. Submit through the AGA Grants Management System with a two-page mentor letter of support, a two-page research abstract and proposal, a reference letter from a current or past professor sent directly to AGA, a one-page personal statement and a transcript.3 February 2027
Applicants notified of status in April 2027. Research runs from May or June to August 2027, with a close-out report in September 2027.30 April 2027
