You must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate programme in the United States at an accredited institution, in good academic standing, with at least one year of undergraduate education left, so seniors graduating during the current academic year or the following autumn… What is funded: Six academic-year undergraduate research awards worth USD 6,075 to USD 7,575 each. Recipients get a USD 6,000 stipend paid in two instalments, in August 2027 and January 2028, three years of AGA student membership worth USD 75, and a travel allowance of up to USD 1,500 to attend Digestive Disease Week 2028 or 2029… Deadline: 3 February 2027 (applications open 7 October 2026). Who can apply
- Restricted by geography and by background. You must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate programme in the United States at an accredited institution, in good academic standing, with at least one year of undergraduate education left, so seniors graduating during the current academic year or the following autumn cannot apply. You must identify with at least one of the groups AGA lists: specified racial and ethnic groups, individuals with disabilities, or individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds meeting two or more criteria defined against United States programmes such as the Federal Free and Reduced Lunch Program, Federal Pell grants and the WIC supplemental nutrition programme. At the time of application you need a mentor committed to at least 12 hours a week of research across the academic year, and that mentor must be a current dues-paying AGA member; the mentor may be on campus or at another local institution. You may not hold a similar award from another organisation such as the NIH, and the award is not salary support for people employed as laboratory technicians. Prior research experience is preferred but not required.
Stage dates
Applications open in the AGA Grants Management System. AGA staff will help applicants without a mentor find one at or near their institution until 15 December.7 October 2026
The only binding date. Submit a mentor letter of support, a two-page research abstract and proposal, a reference letter from a current or past professor, a one-page personal statement and an up-to-date transcript. The mentor and the reference cannot be the same person.3 February 2027
