Who can apply

  • Citizens of African countries who are currently enrolled in a master's or a doctoral programme. Non-African nationals are not eligible, whatever country they study in, and the award has been held by African students enrolled in Africa, North America and Europe alike. Projects must be field-oriented investigations of natural history, conservation, ecology, systematics, wildlife biology, biogeography or behaviour. You do not need to be an ASM member to apply. You do not need a recommendation letter; instead your graduate advisor sends a two to four sentence email confirming your enrolment, and ASM asks specifically that no attached letter be sent. The project description is capped at two pages, figures and tables included; a reference list is optional and does not count against that limit. Applications are encouraged in English or French, and ASM states it will not penalise command of the language and will accept another language if you cannot express your ideas in either. You may apply in every year you are eligible, but you cannot win twice for the same project and cannot win more than twice overall.

Stage dates

ASM opens its submission link for this award on 15 January and closes it on 15 April. Outside that window there is no form to submit to.See the official page

The binding deadline. Your graduate advisor also has to email the committee chair a two to four sentence confirmation that you are a currently enrolled graduate student, and it is your job to make sure that arrives in time.15 April 2027

Dates come from the funder's page for this round. When a round closes, the next round's dates replace these once the funder publishes them.
