Who can apply
- Doctorates in dentistry and human medicine are not funded, nor are postdoctoral programmes, second degrees, part-time study or separate stays abroad. Two subject references are required for a foreign doctoral applicant: the first must come from your doctoral supervisor and the second from a university teacher in the same or a related field, and both are sent to the foundation directly through a link generated in the application portal. References should be in German and may be in English where the referee does not write German. Applications are accepted only through the online portal. Membership of the FDP is not required, and a purely non-financial place on the programme is not available. Stays abroad connected to the doctorate can be supported for at most 12 months, as a contribution rather than a full rate.
Stage dates
The portal accepts applications only inside the two windows (1 to 30 April and 1 to 31 October) and closes at 23:59 on the last day. Applicants hear whether they are invited to the oral stage by 8 February or 8 August of the same year. No year is printed against the deadlines, so none is claimed.See the official page
