Who can apply

  • You need a strong interest in a PhD in neuroethology, a Master's degree or equivalent in a relevant field awarded before October 2026, and fluency in written and spoken English at CEFR C1. The application asks for your Bachelor's certificate and transcript, your Master's certificate and transcript if already completed, English translations where the records are not in English, a motivation letter, research statements naming two of the recruiting Principal Investigators, and two referees who fill in reference forms directly. Degree-awarding rights sit with the University of Bonn, so its faculty admission requirements also apply. No application fee is charged.

Stage dates

Submission deadline. Two referees must submit their reference forms online before this date as well: the school states an application is not complete without them, so the referee step is bound by the same date.15 October 2026

Successful applicants are invited to a selection symposium in late January of the following year. No exact day is published, so this is recorded as the month the school names and is not a date to plan around.31 January 2027

Dates come from the funder's page for this round. When a round closes, the next round's dates replace these once the funder publishes them.
