Applicants based elsewhere, including India, are not eligible for… What is funded: A round-trip air ticket and a maintenance allowance of JPY 362,000 per month for PhD holders, or JPY 200,000 per month if you have not yet received the degree when the research starts. Visits of three months or longer also carry a JPY 200,000 settling-in allowance, plus overseas travel insurance and a research support… Deadline: 25 September 2026, 5:00 pm JST. • CITIZENSHIP RESTRICTED. You must be a citizen or permanent resident of the US, Canada, an EU country, the UK, Switzerland, Norway or Russia, or have worked in research continuously for at least three years at an institution in one of those countries. Applicants based elsewhere, including India, are not eligible for this programme; the separate Short-term (PA) programme covers ASEAN and Africa and runs by nomination only. You must also hold a doctorate from a foreign graduate school obtained within six years, or be enrolled in a doctoral course and expect the degree within two years of the fellowship start. Anyone holding a Japanese resident card at the deadline is excluded. As with the Standard programme, the Japanese host institution files the application, not you.
