Integrated Master’s/PhD Program in Matter to Life, 2027 intake

Max Planck School Matter to Life (Max Planck Schools)

Who can apply: A Bachelor of Science (for example chemistry, physics, molecular biology, biochemistry, materials science, biotechnology) or Bachelor of Engineering of at least six semesters (180 ECTS equivalent); Master’s holders may apply but enter at the Master’s phase. Requires a minimum GPA of 1.7 on the German scale or a top 5%… What is funded: A 5-year integrated programme with a 2-year joint Master’s at the University of Gottingen and Heidelberg University followed by a 3-year PhD in a Fellow’s group anywhere in the Matter to Life network, with full funding for up to five years. Master’s-phase students receive a stipend of EUR 1,565 plus up to EUR 100… Deadline: 1 December 2026 (portal open from 1 September 2026). Round: 2027 admission.

Who can apply

  • A Bachelor of Science (for example chemistry, physics, molecular biology, biochemistry, materials science, biotechnology) or Bachelor of Engineering of at least six semesters (180 ECTS equivalent); Master's holders may apply but enter at the Master's phase. Requires a minimum GPA of 1.7 on the German scale or a top 5% class rank, with 50% of credits in natural sciences including mathematics and a third of those in physics, chemistry and/or mathematics. English proof is due by 15 July of the start year. Applicants with degrees from India, China or Vietnam must submit an APS verification. Nationality does not affect selection.
