Who can apply: Full-time research training in a graduate school, and you must already be enrolled at PhD level at the time of application: the Master’s-level Graduate Student Award has been discontinued. Canadian citizens may train at an Approved Institution inside or outside Canada. International applicants are eligible but must… What is funded: Up to CAD 40,000 a year over a two-year term, increased from the previous cycle. The funds cannot be used for tuition. Deadline: October 5, 2026. Round: 2027 cycle.

International applicants are eligible but must train at an Approved Institution in Canada and meet the student visa criteria. Previous holders of this award are not eligible.
Stage dates
One online submission through the SMApply portal. There is no letter of intent stage. The request for applications was released 4 August 2026, decisions follow in March 2027 and funding starts 1 July 2027.5 October 2026
