Who can apply

  • You must be applying from outside Japan and be scheduled to enrol at a Japanese university or graduate school in April, September or October 2027. You must find and apply to the Japanese institution yourself before applying for the scholarship, and submit a copy of that admission application. At the time of application you must have passed the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test at N3 or above; N2 or above is encouraged so you can talk with Rotarians. All fields of study are eligible. You must be under 45 years of age as of 1 April of the scholarship year. Research students, non-degree students, junior colleges and students on the long-term study system are not eligible, and neither are former Yoneyama scholars. If you plan to study at a language school or at a university outside Japan you cannot apply. Concurrent scholarships are restricted: most additional awards are capped at a combined JPY 576,000 per year, and holding a disallowed one revokes the award and requires repayment. Recipients must attend their Sewa Club meetings at least once a month, and must arrive in Japan before the month their scholarship starts.
