How to Find a Bioinformatics Internship: BSc and MSc

There are four routes into a bioinformatics internship: national fellowship programmes with one annual deadline, a direct email to a specific lab, open-source programmes such as Outreachy and Google Summer of Code, and company internships. Each asks a different thing of you. The direct email has no deadline and no quota, and most students never use it.
Most pages that answer this question hand you a list of programme names and deadlines that expire within a month. This one is about the mechanism instead, because the mechanism does not expire. One date is worth knowing today: the three national Science Academies published their Summer Research Fellowship announcement for 2027 on 10 September 2026, and applications close on 30 November 2026. If you are reading this in that window, that is a live application, not a hypothetical one.
What counts as a bioinformatics internship?
A bioinformatics internship is any supervised block of work where you produce a computational result on real biological data and someone qualified checks it. That definition matters because it is wider than the word “internship” suggests. A two-month fellowship in an academic lab counts. A three-month remote open-source project counts. A dissertation extension supervised by a faculty member counts if you can describe the analysis and show the code.
What does not count, for the purposes of an application to anything later, is a certificate-only programme where you watched recorded lectures and received a PDF. The test is simple: can you name the dataset, the tool, the parameters you chose and the reason you chose them? If a recruiter or a PhD supervisor asks that question and you cannot answer it, the line on your CV does no work. What are the four routes into a bioinformatics internship?
Every real internship a BSc or MSc student gets in this field arrives through one of four doors. They differ in who may apply, when you may apply, and what you must already have in hand. Sorting yourself into the right door first saves months.

The second row is the one to read twice. It has no quota, no deadline and no committee, and it is the only route where the decision is made by one person who can say yes on the day they read your message.
How do you apply to the Science Academies Summer Research Fellowship?
The Summer Research Fellowship Programme is run jointly by three bodies: the Indian Academy of Sciences in Bengaluru, the Indian National Science Academy in New Delhi, and The National Academy of Sciences, India, in Prayagraj. The official 2027 announcement, dated 10 September 2026 and signed by Professor Hemalatha Balaram, Chairperson of the Joint Science Education Panel, states that the academies “offer several two-month Summer Fellowships to enable students/teachers (studying/teaching in India) to work with scientists associated with the three Academies during 2027”.
The mechanics, read straight off that announcement:
- Who may apply. Students and teachers from all universities and colleges affiliated to UGC, AICTE, MCI, Accredited Institutions and Private Universities.
- The deadline. The last date for receipt of online applications for the 2027 round is 30 November 2026. Selection information, along with the guide’s concurrence, is despatched around March to April 2027.
- The recommendation. A student applicant supplies the email id of one teacher familiar with their work, and the Academy approaches that teacher directly for a letter in a prescribed format. This is the step that quietly kills applications. Ask your teacher in person before you enter their address, and tell them the mail will arrive from the Academy rather than from you.
- The work. Two months with an assigned guide, any time during the calendar year, preferably during the summer.
- The money. The announcement says selected candidates receive entitled round trip train fare and a monthly fellowship. It names no amount, so treat any page that quotes you a rupee figure without citing a dated source as a guess.
Applications are submitted online. The Science Education Programmes page at the Indian Academy of Sciences is the working landing page, and INSA hosts its own. Two practical warnings. First, the deeper Summer Research Fellowship URL that search engines still surface returns a page that says the page cannot be found, so start from the landing page above. Second, the NASI domain named in the announcement currently resolves to an unrelated commercial site that has nothing to do with the academy, so do not enter anything there. Go through the Indian Academy of Sciences site instead.
The parallel international route with a comparable shape is the Mitacs Globalink Research Internship in Canada, and DAAD WISE in Germany works similarly for German host labs, though its site blocks automated checks so look it up directly. Institute-run summer programmes at places such as IISc, IISER Pune and NCBS Bengaluru run on their own calendars and are worth a calendar reminder each autumn.

How do you write a cold email to a lab that actually gets a reply?
A cold email fails for one reason: it could have been sent to anybody. A mail that opens with admiration for the professor’s “esteemed work” and asks for “any opportunity in your lab” tells the reader nothing, so there is nothing to reply to. A mail that names one paper and one method gives them a decision they can actually make.
Four things belong in it, in this order.
- One specific paper of theirs, named, with the one result you followed. Not the lab’s general field. One paper, published in the last two or three years, and one sentence about what it found. This single line is what separates your mail from the fifty generic ones that week.
- One method you can already run without supervision. Be concrete and narrow. “I can run BepiPred-3.0 and NetMHCpan and filter the output in Python” is credible. “I am proficient in bioinformatics tools” is not. If their paper used a method you have run, say so plainly.
- What you are asking for, with dates. A two-month unpaid project between May and July, remote or on site, is a request someone can answer. “Any internship opportunity” is not. State whether you need a stipend, because a guide who has no funding will simply not reply rather than write back to say so.
- Proof, in one link. A GitHub repository, a short write-up, or a one-page PDF of an analysis you finished. One link, not an attachment bundle. Our portfolio guide covers what that link should contain.
Keep it under 200 words, put your degree, year and institution in the first line, attach a one-page CV, and send it from your institutional address if you have one. Send to one lab at a time, never as a visible group mail. Expect most mails to go unanswered; that is the normal cost of a route with no quota. If a lab publishes work near your own interests, a second mail four to six weeks later, adding something new you have built since, is fair and often works.
If you are not sure which labs to write to, start from the methods you want to learn rather than from institution rankings. A student who wants to work on in-silico vaccine design can read our spokes on designing a multi-epitope vaccine construct and IEDB population coverage analysis, run the workflow once on a target of their own, and then write to the labs whose papers use it. That order matters. Doing the work first is what gives the mail something to say.
Can you do a bioinformatics internship remotely?
Yes, and the two structured remote routes both run through open source rather than through universities.
Outreachy states on its own site that its internships are “Paid – $7,000 USD total internship stipend”, “Remote – both interns and mentors work remotely” and “3 months – internships run May to August, or December to March”. Eligibility is framed around people who face underrepresentation, systemic bias or discrimination in the technical industry where they are living, and the programme asks applicants to read that framing on its applicant guide rather than assume. Outreachy also says plainly that “Internships are not linked to employment opportunities at supporting organizations”, which is the honest counterweight to every page that sells an internship as a job pipeline. Its published cohort statistics, based on a 2019 longitudinal study of alums and on self-identification, report that past interns were 92% women and 64% people of colour.
Google Summer of Code describes itself as “a global, online program focused on bringing new contributors into open source software development”, where contributors “work with an open source organization on a 12+ week programming project under the guidance of mentors”. The scale is real: the programme’s own page states that over 1,000 open source organizations have mentored 21,000+ new GSoC contributors since 2005. Its single most useful piece of advice, quoted verbatim, is this: “It is very important to reach out to the organizations that you are interested in as soon as possible. The more conversations you have with the community before you submit your proposal the better your chances of being selected into the GSoC.”
For biology specifically, the Open Bioinformatics Foundation is the community to watch. It describes itself as “a non-profit, volunteer-run group that promotes open source software development and Open Science within the biological research community”, and it runs the annual Bioinformatics Open Source Conference. Which organisations take part in GSoC is decided fresh every year, so check the current organisation list rather than assuming last year’s participants are back. EMBL-EBI also runs internships, with terms published on its own page.
Both programmes publish their dates each round and both move them, so read the dates on the site rather than trusting any blog, including this one. For the 2026 rounds Outreachy published applications from 6 to 13 February with internships running 18 May to 17 August, and for its December round it lists applications in early to mid August with internships running from early December 2026 to early March 2027.
What do you need to have before you apply?
Three assets, and none of them require a lab.
One finished analysis you can explain. Not a course completion. One dataset, one question, one result, and a written record of the choices you made. This is what route 2 needs and what route 4 screens for.
Evidence you can be assessed. A free, graded assessment is faster to produce than a semester project and it gives a stranger a reason to believe your self-description. A sense of where this is going. An internship is a step, not a destination. What do you do when the usual things go wrong?
You sent twenty emails and got no replies. Check whether all twenty were the same mail. If the only thing that changed was the name, you sent one email twenty times. Rewrite from the specific paper outward, and cut the volume to three or four mails a week that are genuinely different from each other.
Your CGPA is low. Fellowship routes with a marks cutoff will apply it, so spend your effort on routes 2 and 3, which do not screen that way. A finished analysis and a public repository move a lab more than a transcript does, and the open-source programmes assess contributions you have already made.
You have no wet-lab background. For computational projects this is not the obstacle students think it is. What a guide needs to know is whether you can work unsupervised on a machine. Say which operating system you work in, which languages you use, and whether you have run a job on a cluster or only on a laptop.
No lab near you works on your topic. Remote is normal in this field. Ask explicitly for a remote project in your mail, and propose the working arrangement yourself: a weekly call, a shared repository, a written update every Friday. Proposing the arrangement removes the reason most guides say no.
You got an offer with no stipend. That is a real cost, not a formality. Work out the actual expense of travel and living before you accept, ask whether the institute has a separate hostel or contingency provision, and remember that a remote unpaid project costs far less than an on-site one. It is reasonable to ask a guide directly whether any support is available; the worst answer is no.

Can BSc students get a bioinformatics internship, or is it only for MSc students?
BSc students are eligible for the Science Academies Summer Research Fellowship and for open-source programmes, and many labs take second and third year undergraduates. Company internships skew towards final-year and MSc students. The binding constraint is what you can already run, not the degree you are enrolled in.
Are bioinformatics internships paid?
It depends entirely on the route. Open-source programmes publish their stipends; Outreachy’s site lists $7,000 USD for a three-month internship. Fellowship programmes pay a monthly amount set by the funding body. A direct project with an academic lab is often unpaid, so ask before you accept.
How long should a bioinformatics internship be?
Two to three months is the working standard. The Science Academies fellowship is two months, and Outreachy and Google Summer of Code both run about three months. Anything under four weeks rarely produces a result you can write up, which is the point of doing it.
Do I need publications to get an internship?
No. Publications are an outcome of research, not an entry requirement for it. What a guide looks for is one piece of finished, explainable work and evidence that you can work without constant supervision. A clear repository does that job.
Will an internship guarantee a job or a PhD seat?
No, and be careful with any page that says otherwise. Outreachy states on its own site that internships are not linked to employment at its supporting organizations. An internship gives you a result, a reference and a clearer sense of direction, and those three things are what later applications are built from.
When should I start applying?
Work backwards from the deadline. The Science Academies 2027 round closes on 30 November 2026 for work done during 2027, so the fellowship route runs six to nine months ahead of the work. Open-source programmes need contributions made before the application window. Only the direct email is available on the day you decide to start.
