This review brings together current knowledge on feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), a retrovirus that progressively weakens the immune system of domestic and wild cats. It covers how the virus spreads, the disease it causes, its subtypes and clinical effects, and how infected cats are managed. It also surveys progress and the real challenges in developing antiviral treatments and an effective FIV vaccine, including the adjuvants under study.
