Life Science PhD, Fellowship and Scholarship Deadlines: 64 Close by 28 September 2026

Sixty-four verified life science funding deadlines close by 28 September 2026, and ten of them close today, 15 September. Sixty-one entries are new since last week’s issue, forty-seven of them from India. Every date here was read on the funding organisation’s own website, and every stored record was re-checked on 14 September 2026.
This is our weekly funding roundup for life scientists, a day later than usual. Every entry was checked against the funding organisation’s own website. Nothing here comes from a scholarship aggregator, and nothing here charges a fee to apply. If you only want the imminent ones, the directory has a closing this week filter, and last week’s issue is still up as the 21 September roundup.
The shape of this week is simple. India’s research institutes published a wave of short, funded project posts with walk-in interviews inside the next fortnight, and several of them want exactly the computational skills this site teaches. Europe’s PhD season kept opening, with deadlines that run from October to December.

These are this week’s openings. The full list of every verified opportunity, with filters, is at stemskillslab.com/opportunities.
What closes first?
Ten entries close today, 15 September 2026, so if you are reading this on the day, start with the three that need the most work: the Hubrecht International PhD Program in Utrecht, the IMPRS for Functional Material Design, and a 12-month postdoc in neuro-epigenetics at EMBL Rome, which EMBL says it is reviewing as applications arrive. Two BRIC-NIPGR posts, a BRIC-inStem project JRF and the University of Cape Town’s postdoctoral fellowships also close today.
On 16 September the Canada Postdoctoral Research Award and the Mitacs Globalink Research Internship close, alongside a new CSIR-CCMB post described below. On 17 September the CSIR Direct Senior Research Fellowship closes at Rs. 42,000 a month, and so does a two-month paid internship in forest tree ecology at IISER Kolkata for a master’s graduate, at Rs 18,000 a month, selected by walk-in interview.
Are there posts for bioinformatics and computational biology graduates this week?
Yes, five, all in India. Each names bioinformatics, coding or sequencing data analysis in its eligibility, and each closes within a fortnight.
The strongest is a Project Research Scientist-II at CSIR-CCMB Hyderabad running NGS and genomic data analysis for multi-pathogen wastewater surveillance, at Rs. 67,000 a month plus 30 per cent HRA, with a walk-in interview on 16 September. It takes a PhD, or a postgraduate degree plus three years of experience, and asks for programming in a language such as Python or R shown through publications or a code repository. It is open to Indian nationals only.
For a fresh graduate, CSIR-IHBT Palampur has a Project Associate post on deep learning with hyperspectral images for tea leaf grading that accepts a B.Tech or an M.Sc. in bioinformatics or computational biology, with a walk-in on 24 September. Note that its project tenure ends on 5 December 2026. BRIC-ILS Bhubaneswar wants coding, database development and NGS analysis including single-cell data for a Project Associate-I on genetic variation in multi-ancestry Indian populations, walk-in 23 September. The four Project Associate-I posts at CSIR-NBRI Lucknow on Aroma Mission 4.0 list an M.Sc. in bioinformatics among the accepted degrees, walk-in 18 September. The fifth closes today: a Project JRF in epigenomics and transcriptomics at BRIC-inStem that prefers R or Python and NGS analysis and accepts an M.Sc. in bioinformatics.
If your interest is structure and drug design rather than sequence data, two posts fit better: the ACTREC Junior Research Fellow on de novo peptides and peptidomimetics at Rs. 38,440 a month, walk-in 18 September, and the RCB Project-JRF on the Entamoeba histolytica ribosome as a drug target, where cryo-electron microscopy experience is desirable, walk-in 24 September. Our computational biology skills roadmap is a place to start if you want to build toward posts like these.
What did Indian institutes open this week?
Forty-seven of the sixty-one new entries are Indian. CSIR-IHBT alone accounts for seven entries under one advertisement, No. 16/2026, with walk-ins between 22 and 24 September, from a Project Research Scientist-I on the metabolomics and proteomics of neurocysticercosis at Rs. 58,000 a month to a Project Associate on cultivating heeng. CSIR-CIMAP has walk-ins at three regional centres on three dates: Bengaluru on 18 September, Pantnagar on 23 September and Hyderabad on 30 September.
Two IISER posts apply by email rather than in person. IISER Kolkata’s Project Associate on an mRNA and siRNA cancer vaccine with lipid nanoparticle delivery pays Rs. 37,000 plus 30 per cent HRA and wants a CV by 24 September. IISER Mohali’s Project Associate II on TRAPP complex components as antiviral targets against influenza wants a master’s degree plus two years of research experience, by 30 September. IISER Tirupati added two DBT and ISRO project posts closing 23 and 24 September, both for Indian nationals.
BRIC-NIPGR in New Delhi has some of the latest walk-in dates: four posts in Dr Senjuti Sinharoy’s laboratory on 5 October, including a new Junior Research Fellow building yeast strains for a plant-based meat protein and a Senior Research Fellow on chickpea germplasm, plus a Senior Research Fellow on rice landrace GWAS on 28 September.
Almost all of them ask for NET, GATE or an equivalent test, set an age limit and turn away candidates whose results are awaited, so check all three before you travel. The full Indian set is under opportunities in India.
Which European PhD programmes are open now?
Two funded PhD calls joined the list this week. The IMPRS for Translational Psychiatry in Munich is taking applications for its 2027 intake until 31 October, from students of any country with a master’s or a medical degree. Every student is paid a salary under the German public-sector scale, there are no tuition fees, and you may choose up to three research groups. Two referees must submit their letters by 7 November. In Dresden, the DIGS-ILS PhD Winter Selection 2027, run jointly with IMPRS Bio-MAP, closes on 15 October with a net income of about 1,500 euros a month for up to four years, and your application cannot be submitted until two reference letters have arrived.
Others were already open. The IMB Mainz International PhD Programme and the IMPRS for Brain and Behavior in Bonn both close on 15 October. On 1 December three Max Planck Schools close together: the first PhD cohort of the Max Planck School of Biomedical Artificial Intelligence, which takes up to 25 candidates and accepts life science graduates with a strong computational component, the Max Planck School of Cognition, and the integrated Master’s and PhD programme in Matter to Life.
Undergraduates have one European route with a near date. The Matter to Life Undergraduate Research Opportunities internship funds ten weeks in a German laboratory during 2027, with travel, accommodation and a monthly allowance covered, closing on 1 October. It asks for no letters of recommendation and no English test.
What is new for postdocs?
Beyond EMBL Rome, the EMBL-EBI postdoctoral fellowship in Rob Finn’s group classifies MGnify metagenomic protein sequences into structure-based families, with a first-year stipend of 3,535 pounds a month after tax on a three-year contract, closing 27 September. The EMBL-EBI and Sanger ESPOD fellowship closes the same day, and the BrightFocus National Glaucoma Research postdoctoral award, worth 125,000 US dollars over two years, closes on 24 September.
Which of these are closed to international applicants?
At least eighteen, and you should learn that before you spend a weekend on one. The new ICGEB South African Women in Biotechnology PhD Fellowships in Cape Town pay 16,500 rand a month plus University of Cape Town tuition for three years, but only to women who are South African citizens or permanent residents, and you must secure a written endorsement from an ICGEB Cape Town group leader before you apply. The closing date is 20 October.
Many Indian posts are for Indian nationals only, including the CSIR-CCMB and BRIC-ILS posts above, the ACTREC fellowships and the CSIR Direct-SRF. The NCCS PhD admissions for March 2027, closing 5 December, add a harder barrier: you must already hold a CSIR, UGC, DBT, ICMR or BINC fellowship, or have sat JGEEBILS in December 2025. The NSF Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Biology, closing 29 September, require United States citizenship, nationality or permanent residence even though fellows may host abroad. Both SAMRC scholarships and Chile’s Fulbright ANID doctoral scholarship are national schemes too. Everything open to applicants from abroad is filtered under open to international.
What was left out this week, and why?
Two went over fees, which this list never carries: a BRIC-NII advertisement asks for a Rs. 100 demand draft at the interview, and the BRIC-THSTI Biodesign fellowship still charges Rs. 590. Two went over dates, because the listing and the advertisement on the same funder’s site disagree: a BRIC-NIPGR post (25 October against fifteen days from 10 September) and an IISER Kolkata post (23 September against 23 August).
We also left out the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation’s doctoral scholarship. Its German page shows a 1 October 2026 deadline, but the scholarship requires admission to a German doctorate first, and we could not confirm from the foundation’s own pages that this step is free.
How is this list verified?
On 14 September every stored record was re-fetched from its funder’s own page. Of 288 checked, 12 closed because their dates had passed, 141 were unchanged and 104 were re-verified. No stored deadline changed anywhere in the index this week. Thirty-one pages could not be fetched, and those records were left exactly as they were, because a page that fails to load tells us nothing about whether an opportunity is open.
Every new entry is read twice, by two readers who never see each other’s work, and disagreement about the deadline or the application page drops the record. We also found and merged five duplicate entries: three advertisements from one institute had been stored under two versions of its web address, and one BRIC-NIPGR post had been stored three times. The index now holds 354 records, 269 of them open.
What should I do before the deadline?
Open the official link on the record page and read the funder’s own words first, because a page can change between our check and your visit.
Most of this week’s Indian selections are walk-ins, so the work is paperwork: the institute’s application form, original certificates with photocopies, your NET or GATE result and proof of age. Some turn away anyone who reports late, and some set a written test on the day. For the European PhD programmes, referees are the step that fails, so ask yours this week. If you are still building the record these applications ask for, our free skills assessments and certificates are one way to show verified competence in a specific method.

Which of this week’s opportunities are closed to international applicants?
At least eighteen. The ICGEB South African Women in Biotechnology PhD Fellowships are only for women who are South African citizens or permanent residents. Indian posts at CSIR-CCMB, BRIC-ILS, IISER Tirupati and ACTREC, and the CSIR Direct-SRF, are for Indian nationals, and the NCCS PhD admissions also require an existing national fellowship or a JGEEBILS attempt. The NSF Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Biology require United States citizenship, nationality or permanent residence. The SAMRC scholarships and Chile’s Fulbright ANID doctoral scholarship are national schemes, and the TWAS-SISSA-Lincei visits are for nationals of least developed countries.
How often is this list updated, and how far can I trust it?
We publish a roundup every week and add newly verified opportunities in between. On 14 September every live record was re-fetched from its funder’s own page: 288 were checked, 12 closed because their dates had passed, 141 were unchanged, 104 were re-verified, and no stored deadline changed. Thirty-one pages could not be fetched and were left as they were, because a failed fetch tells us nothing about whether an opportunity is open. Every new entry is read twice by readers who never see each other’s work. The index holds 354 records, 269 of them open. Always open the official link before you apply.
