Life Science PhD, Fellowship and Scholarship Deadlines: 21 Close by 31 August 2026
One hundred and seventy-seven life science funding calls are open right now across seven regions. Twenty-one of them close by 31 August 2026 and four close today, 24 August. Thirty-five entries are new this week, and eight of those fund computational biology, bioinformatics or data science work. Every date here was read on the funder’s own website on 24 August 2026.
This is our weekly funding roundup for life scientists. Every entry was checked against the funding organisation’s own website on 24 August 2026. Nothing here comes from a scholarship aggregator, and the section on verification explains what that distinction bought a reader this week.
The index now holds 177 open calls: 68 in Europe, 34 global schemes with no single home country, 25 in North America, 16 across Asia and the Pacific, 15 in India, 11 in Africa and 8 in Latin America. Thirty-five entries are new since last Monday. Ten closed because their dates passed, and one moved in the other direction: Chile’s Fondecyt postdoctoral competition was due to close on 27 August and now closes on 8 September 2026.

What closes first?
Twenty-one deadlines fall between today and 31 August 2026. Four of them are today, and eight are Indian institute project posts.
- 24 August 2026, today: four close. Three EMBL Grenoble AMBER postdoctoral fellowships, in robotic synchrotron imaging, AI-assisted sample optimisation for cryo-EM and next-generation vitrification workflows for cryo-electron tomography, all at 23:59 CET. And the QIMR Berghofer International PhD Scholarships in Brisbane, which pay AUD 39,220 a year and need three referee reports to have arrived before the same cut-off.
- 27 August 2026: six close. In India, the BRIC-NIPGR New Delhi Research Associate-II and Project Associate-I posts on insect effector proteins, the BRIC-THSTI Faridabad Project Associate-I on whole-body lipid metabolism, which is a walk-in at 9:00 am paying Rs 31,000 a month plus HRA, and the RCB Faridabad Research Associate-I on CRISPR rice at Rs 58,000 a month plus 30 per cent HRA, closing at 5:00 pm. In Europe, the second session of the SISSA doctoral competition in Trieste, closing at 13:00 Italian time. Globally, the Rhodes Scholarships for East Africa (23:59 East Africa Time) and for West Africa (23:59 GMT), each worth GBP 20,400 a year plus full Oxford fees.
- 28 August 2026: four close. The BRIC-NIPGR Research Associate-III on image-based disease screening in chickpea at Rs 67,000 a month plus 27 per cent HRA. The JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship for Research in Japan, standard programme, at 5:00 pm JST, paying JPY 362,000 a month plus airfare and a JPY 200,000 settling-in allowance. Mexico’s Estancias Posdoctorales por Mexico 2026 at 11:59 pm Mexico City time, which is explicitly open to foreign nationals. And The Company of Biologists DMM Conference Travel Grants, up to GBP 500 for a meeting overseas and GBP 300 at home.
- 31 August 2026: seven close. Four more Indian posts, at BRIC-inStem Bengaluru, BRIC-NCCS Pune, BRIC-NIPGR New Delhi and BRIC-THSTI Faridabad, paying between Rs 25,000 and Rs 31,000 a month plus HRA. The Oppenheimer Memorial Trust postgraduate scholarships in South Africa, for study starting January to June 2027. And two Explorers Club field grants at 6:00 pm ET, the Pathfinder Grant at USD 2,500 to USD 5,000 and the Rising Explorer Grant averaging USD 2,000.
Three warnings attach to that list. The QIMR Berghofer date is an expression of interest, not an application: full admission is by invitation afterwards, so missing today makes everything after it unreachable, and the three referee reports are your job to chase. Two of the Indian posts are walk-in interviews, so there is no form and no confirmation email, only a room in Faridabad at 9:00 am. And the two Explorers Club grants pay field costs only: the Club states that its grants do not cover visas, immunisations, tuition, salaries or institutional overhead.
Which of these fund computational and data science work?
Eight of this week’s thirty-five new entries fund computational work directly, which is unusual. Most funding indexes treat bioinformatics as something you happen to do inside a wet-lab grant. On these eight, the modelling, the code or the data analysis is the funded work.

Three of these are worth more attention than a table row gives them.
The ACM SIGHPC fellowships are the best fit for this audience that we have published. SIGHPC defines computational science as any programme where modelling and simulation are the primary research method, and names computational chemistry as an example, so a molecular modelling or drug design student is squarely inside the definition rather than arguing their way in. The money is USD 20,000 a year on top of whatever the institution already pays, for up to four years of a PhD or two of a Master’s, and it is adjusted to the price level of the country where the degree is earned rather than paid at a flat United States rate. There is no ACM or SIGHPC membership requirement. Two conditions decide most applications: you must be enrolled in, or accepted to start, a Master’s or PhD in computational or data science no later than 15 October of the nomination year and be less than halfway through it, and your advisor submits the nomination, not you. April 2027 sounds distant. The conversation with your supervisor is the part that is not.
SISSA’s second session is the shortest-notice item in this issue and the least likely to be on your radar. The Trieste school runs its doctoral competition in two sessions, and the second one runs only if places remain after the first, so it is never advertised as far in advance. For the PhD in Mathematical Analysis, Modelling and Applications there is one SISSA-funded and one FSE+ funded fellowship left, the fellowship is EUR 16,242.96 gross a year for four years, and SISSA states plainly that there is no age or citizenship limit and that extra-EU candidates are welcome. The research covers numerical analysis, scientific computing, machine learning, uncertainty quantification and the mechanobiology of the cell. Applications close at 13:00 Italian time on 27 August, the written examination is on 10 September and the oral on 11 September. One number on that page is not what it looks like: the EUR 120 to EUR 160 regional student tax is paid to the Friuli-Venezia Giulia authority by students who have already been admitted, at enrolment, and is not a fee to apply.
The two Human Technopole routes are one announcement with two different doors. The same institute in Milan is recruiting through two separate doctoral programmes with two separate deadlines and two separate application systems: the SEMM National PhD Programme in Systems Medicine, administered by the University of Milan, closing 7 September, and the Politecnico di Milano PhD in Data Analytics and Decision Sciences, closing 18 September. The projects on the Politecnico route are explicitly AI, machine learning and health data science. Read the announcement once and you will see fourteen positions; read it twice and you will see that which door you use decides your deadline by eleven days.

Which of these can a master’s student in India apply to directly?
Eight Indian institute project posts close within nine days, and they remain the most direct route in the whole index for anyone holding or finishing an MSc. All eight are at Government of India research institutes, none charges a fee to apply, and none will still be open in mid September. The full set lives at opportunities in India.

Three of these reward a computational background rather than tolerating one. The BRIC-THSTI Junior Data Scientist post is the clearest: Rs 50,000 a month for statistical and machine learning analysis of longitudinal clinical data, asking for a degree in computer science, data science, statistics, biostatistics or applied mathematics, with R and Git as stated desirables. The BRIC-NIPGR Research Associate-III post asks for a PhD in computer science, computational biology and bioinformatics or artificial intelligence, names sensor and image data pipelines as the experience it wants, and at Rs 67,000 a month plus 27 per cent house rent allowance is the best paid Indian post this index has carried. The BRIC-NCCS Pune Project Associate-II lists bioinformatics experience as its stated desirable.
Three practical notes hold across the group. Most codes want a national eligibility test, usually CSIR-UGC NET or GATE, and on several posts the test is what separates Rs 31,000 from Rs 25,000 rather than what decides eligibility at all. Every one is a contractual position tied to a specific grant, normally for a year or the tenability of the project, so treat it as a paid research apprenticeship and not as a portable award. And none of these adverts prints a nationality clause, which is not the same as an open door: these are temporary Government of India project posts, so our records say the condition is not stated rather than claiming anyone may apply.
One warning specific to THSTI. A single advertisement PDF there covers four different principal investigators with four different walk-in dates, so the date that applies to you depends entirely on which supervisor’s post you are answering. Match on the named principal investigator, not on the job title.
Do any of these require a paid society membership?
Nine of this week’s new entries come from British learned societies, and eight of the nine sit behind a paid membership. That is not a reason to skip them, but it is a reason to read the eligibility line before the funding line.
A membership fee and an application fee are different things, and only one of them disqualifies a scheme from this list. We exclude any opportunity that charges you money to be considered, without exception. Annual dues to a scientific society are a different transaction: you get a journal, a conference rate and a professional affiliation, and the grant is one of several things the membership makes available. We publish those, and we say what they cost.

Two details in that table decide whether a scheme is available to you this year rather than next. The ASAB Research Grants require twelve months of prior membership, so joining today does not make you eligible on 1 October; it makes you eligible in autumn 2027. Every other membership condition here can be satisfied now, and the ASAB Conference Attendance Grants explicitly accept an application from someone who has applied for membership by the grant deadline and completes it within a month.
The Linnean Society’s Dennis Stanfield Memorial Fund is the outlier and the one to look at first if it fits. Up to GBP 2,000 for botanical research on tropical African plants, no membership requirement, no career-stage restriction, closing 30 September 2026. The Society’s own Appleyard Fund, by contrast, is limited to Fellows and Associates and excludes registered students outright, so two grants from one society answer this question differently. That is the general lesson, and it is worth carrying to every society page you read: check the scheme, not the grants index.
Which of these are closed to international applicants?
Twenty-six of the 177 entries are restricted by nationality, residence or immigration status, and several of them are recommended widely with no caveat attached. The unrestricted majority is at opportunities open to international applicants, but read this first.
The three new American Philosophical Society grants differ from each other, on the same site, in the same week. The Lewis and Clark Fund for Exploration and Field Research in Astrobiology, closing 2 November 2026, states that applicants from outside the United States, and United States citizens affiliated with foreign institutions, may not apply. Its sibling, the Lewis and Clark Fund for Exploration and Field Research, closing 13 November, admits a foreign applicant who is either based at a United States institution or plans to do the work in the United States, and then restricts by career stage instead: doctoral students only, with postdoctoral fellows, master’s candidates and undergraduates ruled out by name. The Baruch Blumberg Grants in Astrobiology, closing 16 November, are the most open of the three, taking graduate students, postdocs and junior scientists within five years of a doctorate, and unusually for this list they will fund conference attendance as well as fieldwork.
Two new Japanese grants exclude the largest countries in their own region. Both Nagao Natural Environment Foundation programmes, the Research Grant Programme closing 14 October 2026 at 10:00 JST and the Commemorative Grant Fund closing 31 January 2027, are open only to nationals of 27 named Asia-Pacific developing countries. India, China and Pakistan are not on that list. Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan and most of Southeast Asia and the Pacific are.
Residence and religion, not nationality, are the bar on two more. Chile’s Fondecyt postdoctoral competition, now closing 8 September 2026, admits only researchers of Chilean nationality or foreigners holding permanent residence in Chile. KAAD’s Scholarship Programme 1 in Germany requires that you come from, and currently live in, a country in Africa, Asia, the Middle East or Latin America, and that you be Catholic, or in the Middle East generally of another Christian confession; applicants of other religions can be proposed by a Catholic partner organisation on the strength of interreligious dialogue.
Four more restrictions are worth naming because they are easy to miss. The Rhodes Scholarship for East Africa is for citizens of Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, South Sudan and Burundi, and Kenyan citizens are specifically not eligible there and have a separate scholarship. The Oppenheimer Memorial Trust applies a different rule per level: South African citizens and permanent residents for master’s and doctoral study, and citizens, permanent residents and foreign nationals for postdoctoral study. The new ACM-W conference scholarship is open worldwide but only to students who identify as female, and its FAQ states that a recent graduate who is no longer a student cannot apply. And IDEA WILD’s equipment grant has no nationality rule at all but a logistical one that functions like one: you must supply a valid United States contact who can receive the equipment and forward it, because IDEA WILD will not ship internationally, including to Canada.
Against all of that, 124 of the 177 entries place no citizenship condition on the applicant. The clearest new examples are the ACM SIGHPC Computational and Data Science Fellowships, open to students at institutions anywhere in the world with the award adjusted to local prices, and the SISSA doctoral competition in Trieste, whose call states in terms that there is no age or citizenship limit and that extra-EU candidates are welcome.
Why are six verified opportunities missing from this list?
Six opportunities passed on their merits this week and are still not on this page. Saying so is the point of the section, because a roundup that shows only what survived teaches you nothing about how to read a funder’s page yourself. Three of them are worth your time anyway, and here is exactly what stopped us publishing each.
The SPIE student scholarships, dropped over twenty dollars that live on a different page. SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, runs large scholarships open worldwide: the D.J. Lovell Scholarship is worth USD 11,000, the John Kiel Scholarship USD 10,000, and SPIE states it awarded USD 351,000 to 85 students in May 2026. The scholarship page says, in its own words, that to apply you must be an active SPIE Student Member. The membership page prices student membership at USD 20 for one year. That makes the award free and unreachable without a payment, which is the shape this list excludes, and no automated check can see it because the price is never printed beside the award. If you are already an SPIE member, apply. If you are not, at least now you know what the application actually costs.
The Stewart Rhind Communication Award, dropped because the funder prints two deadlines that cannot both be right. The Society for Reproduction and Fertility’s grants index says the award is open for 2026 with a deadline of 31 October 2026. Its own guidelines page for the same award says submissions close before the September academic term begins, for judging. Those are not the same date and nothing on the site reconciles them. Membership is not the obstacle here and that is worth recording, because the guidelines say entries can be submitted from both members and non-members, unlike the Society’s travel grants. We do not resolve a contradiction like this by picking the likelier reading, so the record was dropped. Write to the Society before you write the entry.
The Honjo International Scholarship Foundation, dropped because the funder says its own dates are not final. This one is a genuine loss, because it is a monthly stipend of JPY 180,000 to JPY 230,000 for a master’s or doctorate in Japan, open to all nationalities and all research fields, with no university pre-selection and applications accepted from abroad. Its page prints an application period of 1 September to 31 October 2026 and then adds that the precise dates will be announced in the application guideline. An application window is not a deadline, and a funder telling you the dates may still move is a funder telling you not to publish them. Watch hisf.or.jp from 1 September. Read the eligibility before you invest an evening: the interviews are conducted in Japanese with no exceptions, and the age caps are 30 for a master’s and 35 for a doctorate.
Three more were dropped for reasons that will not interest you as much but should be on the record. The CSIR Direct Senior Research Fellowship 2026, worth Rs 42,000 a month with no application fee and closing 17 September, was read twice and the two readings pointed at different pages as the official source, so it failed our own consistency check rather than anything on CSIR’s site; it should reappear here next week. The NASA Postdoctoral Program publishes its 1 November 2026 deadline only on a site run by its administering contractor, and we could not find it on any nasa.gov page, so it does not meet the rule that a fact must come from the funder’s own domain. And CECAM, the European centre for atomic and molecular computation, runs the most on-brand careers feed we have ever found, full of funded computational-science PhD posts, but every one of them is an individual professor’s vacancy at a third-party university, which makes CECAM a noticeboard rather than a funder. Bookmark that feed for yourself; we cannot publish from it.
Three machine-readable sources were also polled and yielded nothing student-facing. The NSF upcoming-due-dates feed carried eight items, every one of them an institutional or principal-investigator programme. ICMR’s call-for-proposals page carried four live calls, all of them for institutions rather than individuals. BIRAC’s call-for-proposals page is aimed at companies and entrepreneurs and its live entries had all closed.
How is this list verified?
Every fact in this article comes from the funding organisation’s own domain, fetched on 24 August 2026. Aggregators are used only to notice that an opportunity might exist. We then find the funder’s page and read the deadline, the eligibility and the funding there. If we cannot find an official page, the opportunity does not appear, with no caveat and no partial entry.
This week that rule earned its keep on one record. Before publishing, every live entry was re-fetched from the funder’s page. Ten closed because their dates had passed. One moved later: Chile’s Fondecyt de Postdoctorado 2027 was stored as closing 27 August 2026, and our check could no longer find that date on the page. A human read it, and the reason was on the page too. Resolución 6830/2026, dated 18 August 2026, amended the competition rules, and the applicant’s date for sending a proposal for institutional sponsorship is now 8 September 2026 at 16:00 continental Chile time, with institutional sponsorship itself closing on 22 September. The eligibility window moved with it: the doctorate must now have been obtained between 1 January 2023 and 22 September 2026. Anyone working from a copy of that call made two weeks ago is working from the wrong dates, in the direction that costs a fortnight of preparation time.
Every new entry is read twice, by two readers working from the page alone, neither of whom sees the other’s answer. The two readings are then compared field by field. Agreement on the deadline and the official link is mandatory, and a disagreement on either one deletes the record, as it did for the CSIR fellowship above. A disagreement on a softer field, such as a stipend figure, deletes that field and keeps the entry, because an unpublished number costs you nothing and a wrong one costs you trust.
We also refuse to print a date we cannot stand behind. Seventy-four of the 177 entries carry no date at all, and that is deliberate. Where a funder prints a day and month with no year, which is normal for learned societies whose deadline repeats annually, we print exactly what they printed: the British Mycological Society’s grants open 1 January and close 31 March with no year anywhere on the page, and the Open Bioinformatics Foundation prints 1 April, 1 August and 1 December the same way. Where a funder points at a per-course or per-committee deadline we say the deadline varies and send you to the body that sets it, as with KAAD, whose date is fixed by its partner committee in your own region. Where there is genuinely no deadline, we say so, and you can browse those at rolling opportunities.
One more thing is worth knowing, because it is the failure mode this list exists to prevent, running in reverse. Twelve funder pages could not be fetched at all this week: some returned 403 to our request, several returned a page whose content only exists after JavaScript runs, and the Schlumberger Foundation’s fellowship site presented a certificate issued for a different hostname. Not one of those records was touched. A page that fails to load tells us nothing about whether an opportunity is open, and closing a live call because a server refused a connection is exactly the harm we are trying to avoid. One of the twelve, the American Heart Association postdoctoral fellowship, has now failed three consecutive checks and is flagged for a human to open in a browser. Every record carries the date it was last successfully read.
What should I do before the deadline?
Four practical notes that apply across most of this list.
Find the first stage before you value anything. A page with a key dates table almost always has a stage above the date you found, and that earlier stage is the one that locks you out. QIMR Berghofer’s date today is an expression of interest: full admission is by invitation only afterwards, so the August date is the whole competition as far as you are concerned. Chile’s Fondecyt prints two dates and only the earlier one is yours, because sending the proposal for institutional sponsorship by 8 September is your action and the 22 September sponsorship close is the university’s. Get the earlier date into your calendar and let the institution worry about the later one.
Someone else may have to act before you can submit at all. The ACM SIGHPC fellowship nomination is submitted by your advisor, so the first step is a conversation, not a form. The ACM-W conference scholarship is refused outright if your advisor’s support letter has not been uploaded by the deadline, even when your own application arrived in time. The British Mycological Society’s Undergraduate Student Vacation Bursary is applied for by the supervisor, and the ASAB Undergraduate Project Scholarships need a supervisor who is an ASAB member holding a PhD, even though the undergraduate is the named applicant. If your application depends on another person, the real deadline is whenever that person needs to be asked, which is usually two weeks earlier than you think.
A walk-in is a place, not a deadline. Three BRIC-THSTI Faridabad posts in this issue, on 27 August, 31 August and 1 September, have no submission step: you appear at 9:00 am with your documents, and the written test, skill test and interview happen that day. Budget the travel before you decide the post is worth applying for, read the advert for the document list because originals are checked at the desk, and note that THSTI asks candidates to deposit their phone at reception.
Undated does not mean unavailable. Seventy-four entries here have no deadline, and some are the easiest to act on today. The Rufford Foundation funds conservation fieldwork in over 120 eligible countries, India included, with no deadline of any kind. IDEA WILD buys and ships the field or laboratory equipment a conservation project needs, reviews every request within three to six months, and gives priority to requests under USD 1,500, though you will need a United States contact to receive the shipment. The Austrian Science Fund’s ESPRIT scheme takes rolling submissions from postdocs and decides at five meetings a year. None of these will ever appear in a closing-soon list, which is exactly why they are worth a Saturday morning.

Which life science funding deadlines close this week?
Twenty-one, between 24 and 31 August 2026. Four close today: three EMBL Grenoble AMBER postdoctoral fellowships at 23:59 CET and the QIMR Berghofer International PhD Scholarships in Brisbane. On 27 August, three Indian institute posts at BRIC-NIPGR, BRIC-THSTI and RCB Faridabad, the second session of the SISSA doctoral competition in Trieste, and the Rhodes Scholarships for East Africa and West Africa. On 28 August, the BRIC-NIPGR Research Associate-III post, the JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship for Research in Japan, Mexico’s Estancias Posdoctorales and The Company of Biologists DMM Conference Travel Grants. On 31 August, four more Indian posts, the Oppenheimer Memorial Trust scholarships in South Africa, and two Explorers Club field grants.
Which of these fund computational biology or bioinformatics work?
Eight of this week’s new entries. The ACM SIGHPC Computational and Data Science Fellowships pay USD 20,000 a year, adjusted to local prices, for up to four years of a PhD or two of a Master’s, are open worldwide and need no ACM membership; nominations close 30 April 2027 and your advisor submits them. SISSA Trieste has a second-session PhD competition in mathematical analysis, modelling and applications closing 27 August 2026, covering numerical analysis, scientific computing and machine learning, with no age or citizenship limit. Human Technopole in Milan is recruiting PhD students through two programmes with different deadlines, systems medicine on 7 September and data analytics on 18 September 2026. In India, BRIC-THSTI is hiring a Junior Data Scientist at Rs 50,000 a month and a Project Associate-I for a metabolic modelling web application, and the BRIC-NIPGR Research Associate-III post on image-based disease screening asks for a PhD in computer science, computational biology or AI at Rs 67,000 a month. The ACM-W scholarship pays up to USD 1,200 to attend a computing research conference.
Can a master’s student apply to any of these directly?
Yes. The Indian institute project posts are the most direct route in the index: eight close between 27 August and 1 September 2026, at BRIC-NIPGR New Delhi, BRIC-THSTI Faridabad, RCB Faridabad, BRIC-inStem Bengaluru and BRIC-NCCS Pune, paying between Rs 25,000 and Rs 67,000 a month plus house rent allowance, and none charges a fee. Most codes want CSIR-UGC NET or GATE, though on several posts the test raises the stipend rather than deciding eligibility. Outside India, the SISSA doctoral competition takes anyone holding an equivalent foreign master’s degree with no age or citizenship limit, the ACM SIGHPC fellowships explicitly cover Master’s students for up to two years, and the Baruch Blumberg Grants in Astrobiology take graduate students.
Do any of these charge an application fee?
None of them. Any opportunity that charges you money to be considered is excluded without exception, and that rule cost this issue the SPIE student scholarships, which are worth up to USD 11,000 but require an active SPIE Student Membership priced at USD 20 on a different page. An annual society membership is a different transaction and does not automatically disqualify a scheme; we publish those and say what they cost, which this week means GBP 10 a year for a British Mycological Society undergraduate and GBP 21 for a postgraduate. Two variations to watch. The ASAB Research Grants require twelve months of membership before the closing date, so joining now does not make you eligible this year. And a fee can be specific to one advert rather than to an institution: RCB Faridabad charges Rs 200 on its Biosafety Support Unit recruitment and nothing at all on the project post listed here, so read the fee line on the advert in front of you.
Why do 74 of these entries have no deadline date?
Because the funder did not print one, and we will not invent it. Some are genuinely rolling: the Rufford Foundation states there are no deadlines, IDEA WILD’s FAQ says there are no formal deadlines and reviews each request within three to six months, and the Austrian Science Fund’s ESPRIT scheme decides at five meetings a year. Some print a recurring day and month with no year at all, which is normal for learned societies: the British Mycological Society opens 1 January and closes 31 March, and the Open Bioinformatics Foundation runs rounds on 1 April, 1 August and 1 December. Others defer to a date we cannot see, such as KAAD, whose deadline is set by its partner committee in your own region. In every case we print the funder’s own wording and link to the page that holds the operative date.
How often is this list updated, and how far can I trust it?
We publish a roundup every week and add newly verified opportunities in between.
