Life Science PhD, Fellowship and Scholarship Deadlines: 38 Close by 15 September 2026

Two hundred and five life science funding calls are open across seven regions. Eight close today, 31 August 2026, and thirty more by 15 September. Twenty-one entries are new this week, including three Quebec competitions open to non-Canadians and five southern-hemisphere summer programmes. Every date was read on the funder’s own site on 31 August 2026.

This is our weekly funding roundup for life scientists. Every entry was checked against the funding organisation’s own website on 31 August 2026. Nothing here comes from a scholarship aggregator, and one entry in this issue exists only because a second reader went looking for a date written in words.

The index now holds 205 open calls: 70 in Europe, 44 in North America, 34 global schemes with no single home country, 20 across Asia and the Pacific, 17 in India, 12 in Africa and 8 in Latin America. Twenty-one entries are new since last Monday. Seven closed because their dates passed, and no stored deadline moved anywhere in the index this week.

Amgen Scholars Australia Program, Summer 2027

Who can apply: Undergraduate students enrolled at accredited colleges and universities across Australia, New Zealand and Oceania. Students in any major may apply, not only science or engineering majors, and prior research experience is not required. The single host institution is the University of Melbourne. The 2027 Postdoctoral Scholar Program (First Round)

Who can apply: PhD conferred on or after 1 January 2022. The applicant must first secure an Academia Sinica researcher as Sponsoring Mentor, and that mentor, not the applicant, submits the application. Summer Research Scholarship Programme 2026/2027

Who can apply: Open to both domestic and international students, but only to those already enrolled at a New Zealand university: the conditions document describes the programme as being for current full-time enrolled international and domestic university students, so the restriction is where you study, not your nationality. France and Europe EMCR Mobility Grants

Who can apply: Applicant must be living in Australia at both application and travel, employed as a scientist or faculty member at an Australian research organisation, and have a PhD awarded no more than fifteen years before the deadline. What closes first?

Eight deadlines fall today, 31 August 2026, and thirty more fall between tomorrow and 15 September. The eight today are four Indian institute project posts, at BRIC-inStem Bengaluru, BRIC-NCCS Pune, BRIC-NIPGR New Delhi and BRIC-THSTI Faridabad; the Amgen Scholars Australia Program for summer 2027 at the University of Melbourne; the Oppenheimer Memorial Trust postgraduate scholarships in South Africa; and the two Explorers Club field grants, the Pathfinder Grant and the Rising Explorer Grant, both at 6:00 pm US Eastern Time.

The first fortnight of September is the densest stretch this index has carried since the lane started. Twelve calls close on 1 September alone.

Three warnings attach to that list. The Victoria University of Wellington scholarship has a gate in front of the gate. Its deadline is 4:30 pm on 15 September, but you cannot see the project list, and therefore cannot apply, until you email the programme for access, and the university says it will not accept access requests after 1 September. That is tomorrow, and the university prints no year against it, so we store no date for it. Ask for access today if this one interests you at all. Four of the September entries are Indian walk-in interviews, which means there is no form, no confirmation email and no upload: there is a room in Faridabad at 9:00 am, originals checked at the desk, and phones deposited at reception. And a single THSTI advertisement PDF covers several posts with several different walk-in dates, so match on the named principal investigator and the project title rather than the job title.

Why are five of this week’s new entries in Australia and New Zealand?

Late August and early September are the low season for this index. Nearly every annual student scheme on a northern-hemisphere cycle has closed for 2026 and has not yet announced 2027. Five of this week’s twenty-one new entries come from the other half of the world, where the academic year runs the other way and the summer 2027 dates are printed now.

Two things separate this group from the northern-hemisphere programmes in the rest of the index, and both are worth understanding before you spend an evening on an application. Four of the five are open only to students already enrolled at that university or in that country. That is a restriction on where you study, not on your passport, and it is a different kind of barrier from a citizenship rule: it cannot be argued around, but it also means an international student already at the University of Queensland or at a New Zealand university is squarely inside the rules. And the UQ grant is not wages. Participation is formally an Unpaid Work Experience arrangement, so the AUD 3,000 is a grant, and a six-week summer placement consumes your entire thirty-day annual unpaid work experience allowance. Check your remaining days before you apply, because that allowance, and not the money, is what usually stops a student taking both rounds in one year.

Why do five of the new entries not say what they pay?

Five of this week’s twenty-one new entries do not print what they pay. That is not a defect in our records. It is the funder’s own page saying nothing, and we would rather show you the gap than fill it with a plausible number.

Two BRIC-inStem adverts are the clearest case. The Junior Research Fellow and Post Doctoral Fellow posts in Dr Reena Singh’s laboratory in Bengaluru, closing 7 and 4 September, both carry a general condition saying the Institute may fix the consolidated salary lower or higher “within the given range” and then print no range at all. So the pay is genuinely unknown from the advert. Both posts state an application fee of nil, both are online-only through the inStem job portal, and both screen applications as they arrive, which makes applying early worth more here than on a scheme with a fixed review date.

The Children’s Medical Research Institute case is the one to watch out for, because its page does carry a dollar figure and that figure belongs to something else. The only amount on the CMRI student page is AUD 40,000 a year for up to three and a half years, and it attaches to the separate PhD scholarships administered by the University of Sydney, not to the summer scholarships. Reading the nearest number on a page as the number for the scheme you are looking at is how a wrong figure enters circulation, so we print none and suggest you ask before committing eight weeks.

The Africa Health Research Institute has the same shape. Its postdoctoral fellowship, an open call closing 31 December 2026 at the institute’s KwaZulu-Natal campuses, prints no rand figure anywhere on the domain. The phrase “a competitive stipend” does appear on the site, under the PhD programme rather than the postdoc, and carrying it across would be an invention. Two costs do fall on an international applicant there without being AHRI fees: your foreign qualification must be evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority before you apply, and you arrange your own visa.

And the CRG International PhD Programme in Barcelona describes rather than quantifies. It offers up to 20 fully funded positions on four-year employment contracts under Spanish national regulations, which means a salary rather than a stipend, with full health and occupational insurance and inclusion in Spanish social security. No figure is published. What the call does state, and what very few PhD calls state, is that accommodation and flights are provided for candidates invited to the in-person interview round in Barcelona, so the cost of reaching the final stage does not fall on the applicant. The deadline is 22 November 2026 and the programme covers computational biology, health genomics, bioinformatics and machine learning applied to biology, which makes it one of the better fits in this index for this site’s readers. Can a non-Canadian apply for the Quebec scholarships?

The three Fonds de recherche du Quebec competitions that opened this week are the most useful North American entries in this issue for a reader outside North America, and the reason is a single clause that most summaries of them leave out.

The default route requires Canadian citizenship or permanent residence with a valid RAMQ card, and then the rules say an applicant who is neither is still eligible. For the master’s and doctoral competitions that route needs proof of admission to a programme of study at a Quebec university, or a consent form from your research supervisor. For the postdoctoral competition it is a consent form plus a letter of acceptance from your supervisor, with no admission alternative. In all three cases the condition attached is that you carry out the work in Quebec, and for the master’s and doctoral awards you cannot use the scholarship for a cotutelle with a university outside Quebec. So the barrier is where the work happens, not what passport you hold.

Three practical details decide most applications. Timing is measured in terms already completed, not in years. The master’s competition wants you enrolled for no more than three full-time semesters before 1 May 2027; the doctoral competition allows fourteen full-time terms, or twenty for direct-entry and fast-tracked candidates; the postdoctoral competition wants a doctorate obtained within the last two years, or a thesis you plan to submit by 1 March 2028, with extensions for parental leave, bereavement, health reasons, a career period outside research, or disability. Submitting is a status, not an action. The rules state that at the deadline the application must show “Submitted to the Fonds” in the FRQnet portal, so an application saved but not submitted at 15:59 is not an application. And you get one shot a year across the whole family. An applicant may submit to only one FRQ training award programme in a given year, so choose before you start rather than after.

Results for all three are announced in April 2027, and none of them charges a fee.

Which of these are closed to international applicants?

Thirty-two of the 205 entries are closed to some applicants by nationality, residence or immigration status, and a further 35 say nothing at all about it, which we record as unstated rather than as an open door. The 138 that place no citizenship condition on the applicant are at opportunities open to international applicants. Four restrictions among this week’s new entries are worth naming, because three of them are easy to miss and one is the opposite of what the scheme’s name suggests.

The UNESCO fellowship is not open to any nationality, and India is not on its list. The UNESCO/Japan Young Researchers’ Fellowships Programme, also called the Keizo Obuchi programme, closes on 30 September 2026 and pays up to USD 10,000 for a research stay of three to nine months at a Japanese university, with an artificial intelligence stream that covers AI for ecosystem monitoring and biodiversity assessment and responsible AI use in scientific research. Eligibility is a closed list: applicants must be nationals of one of the 83 Member States and Associate Members named in Annex 1 of the call, and India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal are not on the 2026 list. There is a second thing that page will not tell you plainly. Applications reach UNESCO only through your own National Commission for UNESCO, and the instructions say to submit to that Commission “at least 2 weeks before the required deadline” without giving a date. Your working deadline is therefore around the middle of September, not the end of it.

A Fulbright scholarship that is closed to everyone except Chileans, and aimed at the applicants most schemes screen out. The Beca de Doctorado BIO Fulbright ANID closes on 28 September 2026 at 13:00 continental Chile time, not at midnight, and funds a full PhD at a United States university for up to four years. It is open only to Chilean nationals resident in Chile, and its targeting is unusual enough to read twice: it is for applicants who do not have enough English to compete on equal terms in the regular ANID and Fulbright overseas competitions, and who are in socioeconomic vulnerability. You must meet at least two of three criteria, being state-subsidised secondary schooling, a needs-based undergraduate loan or bursary, or parents whose education stopped at or below completed secondary, and you must also show an undergraduate average of 5.0 or above out of 7.0 or a place in the top 30 per cent of your cohort. Fulbright sponsorship is a prerequisite and lapses if ANID does not then select you.

Wellcome’s Early-Career Awards have no deadline and a date that behaves like one. The scheme accepts applications year round, pays your salary plus up to GBP 400,000 for research expenses over about five years, and funds visa and work permit costs. The restriction is on where your administering organisation sits, not on your nationality, and it narrows on 29 October 2026: from that date Wellcome will accept lead applicants only from eligible organisations in the United Kingdom and in low- and middle-income countries in Africa, South Asia and South-East Asia. Applications submitted on or before 28 October 2026 are assessed under the current, wider rules, which also cover the Republic of Ireland. India is excluded as a host location under both the current and the future rules, so an India-based reader would need to be hosted elsewhere. We store no deadline against this record, because printing 28 October as the deadline would mislead every applicant it does not bind.

And the Studienstiftung’s doctoral scholarship is open to any nationality on one condition. Nationality is irrelevant if the doctorate is done at a German university where the thesis will also be submitted, and you must already have been accepted onto that programme. It pays EUR 1,650 a month for three years, extendable by up to six months to a maximum of 42 months. The application window is the thing to diarise: the foundation has replaced its rolling doctoral intake with four fixed calls, each open for exactly fourteen days, and the next runs 1 to 14 October 2026 for the selection meeting in May 2027. Applications are submitted jointly with your academic supervisor, so the conversation to have this week is with them.

Which of these can an MSc student in India apply to directly?

Six new Indian institute project posts entered the index this week, and four more close today. These remain the most direct route in the whole index for anyone holding or finishing an MSc: they are at Government of India research institutes, none charges a fee to apply, and none of them will still be open in October. The full set lives at opportunities in India.

The BRIC-THSTI Project Technical Support-II post is the one to look at if you have a bachelor’s degree and think this index is not for you. It takes a three-year graduation degree in any branch of life sciences with two years of post-qualification experience, or a Class 12 science pass with a medical laboratory technology diploma and five years. Gel electrophoresis, molecular assays and serological assays are the named skills. At Rs 20,000 a month plus house rent allowance it is the lowest-paid entry in this table, and it is also one of very few adverts anywhere in the index that a bachelor’s-level candidate can answer directly.

At the other end, the Project Research Scientist-II post on the same walk-in date pays Rs 67,000 a month plus HRA and takes either a postgraduate life sciences degree with three years of research laboratory experience or an awarded PhD, with the age limit at 40. Both are on the Placenta Health Project, an adaptive dose-finding platform trial. The BRIC-NCCS Junior Research Fellow post is the best-paid entry route in the table for someone with NET or GATE, at Rs 37,000 a month plus HRA on a project running to June 2027, and its stated desirable is hands-on Drosophila work: setting up crosses, dissection, immunocytochemistry, confocal imaging and molecular cloning.

Three practical notes hold across the group. A walk-in is not a deadline in the ordinary sense. There is nothing to submit and nothing to confirm, only a room in Faridabad at 9:00 am on the day, with originals checked at the desk and mobile phones deposited at reception. If you cannot be physically present that morning, the post is not available to you at any price. Most codes want CSIR-UGC NET or GATE, and on several posts the test decides the rate rather than eligibility, separating Rs 31,000 from Rs 25,000. And none of these adverts prints a nationality clause, which is not the same as an open door: these are temporary Government of India project posts, so our records say the condition is not stated rather than claiming that anyone may apply. Why are five verified opportunities missing from this list?

Five opportunities were verified this week and are still not on this page, and one of them is a real loss. Saying so is the point of this section, because a roundup that shows only what survived teaches you nothing about how to read a funder’s page yourself.

Two Indian posts died on a date that cannot be read. The BRIC-NIPGR Research Associate-I post on climate-resilient chickpea and brassica by gene editing, at Rs 58,000 a month plus 27 per cent house rent allowance under a Gates Foundation project, prints its closing date in the vacancy table as 11/09/2026 and nowhere else. Both components of that date are twelve or less, so it reads equally well as 11 September and as 9 November. The advertisement PDF itself gives no date at all, only “within 15 days from the date of advertisement”, and counting fifteen days forward from the advertisement would mean we supplied the date rather than the funder. A second reader searched the whole domain for the same date written with a month name and did not find one. The BRIC-NIAB Project Technical Support-III post in Hyderabad failed the same way, on “04-09-2026”, with the added problem that its notification lives on niab.org.in while the institute’s content site is niab.res.in. Both posts are real. Neither is publishable by us. If either interests you, the two listing pages are worth opening yourself, and the institutes are worth an email asking them to print the month.

The DBT BioCARe programme for women researchers is the loss, and it is our fault rather than the funder’s. It is a career re-entry scheme for Indian women researchers who are currently unemployed, closing 23 September 2026, offering a consolidated project grant plus a personal fellowship for up to three years, restricted to first-time grant holders with no regular position. The date is unambiguous, printed as “23rd September, 2026”. Our two independent readers cited two different pages on the same funder’s site as the place a reader should go, and our own rule drops a record when its two readings disagree about where to send you. The rule cost us a good opportunity this week and we would rather pay that than relax it. The programme is administered by the DBT-HRD unit at the Regional Centre for Biotechnology, and the call is on its announcements page. Expect this record next week.

Two American fellowships were dropped for being fellowships you cannot personally apply to. The two NIH ECHO awards, a dissertation grant and a Kirschstein NRSA postdoctoral fellowship for work on the ECHO Cohort data, look like individual awards and are not: in both cases the eligible applicant is an organisation, the university or sponsoring institution submits, and the candidate is named as principal investigator on someone else’s application. Both also require the individual to be a United States citizen, non-citizen national or lawful permanent resident by the time of award, which we could confirm only by pulling the full announcement text from Grants.gov, because the NIH’s own grants site refuses every automated request. If you are at a United States institution and your supervisor is willing to submit, those calls close on 15 October and 2 December 2026.

How is this list verified?

Before this issue, every live record in the index was re-fetched from the funder’s own page. That run read 202 records, successfully loaded 184 pages, and closed 7 records whose dates had passed. No stored deadline changed anywhere in the index this week, which is a quieter result than last week’s, when Chile’s Fondecyt postdoctoral competition moved from 27 August to 8 September.

Twenty pages could not be fetched at all, and those twenty records were left exactly as they were. That is deliberate and it is the single most important rule in how this index is maintained. A page that returns 403 to an automated client, or serves a certificate our machine does not trust, or returns a body that is only JavaScript, has told us nothing about whether a student can still apply. Two Rhodes Scholarship records are a live example: they failed to load during this week’s check after loading fine last week, so we left them alone rather than closing them on the strength of a network error. Closing a live opportunity because a content delivery network said no is precisely the harm this index exists to prevent.

Every new entry is read twice, by two readers who never see each other’s work, and the two readings are compared field by field. Disagreement about the deadline or about which page a reader should go to drops the record. Disagreement about a softer field, such as a stipend figure, blanks that field and keeps the record, which is why several entries above say a funder prints no amount: an unpublished figure costs you nothing, a wrong one costs you trust. Five records were dropped this week by that comparison, and this issue names all five rather than quietly shipping twenty-one instead of twenty-six.

Every record carries the date it was last verified. Always open the official link before you apply. The funder’s page is the authority and this page is a signpost to it.

What should I do before the deadline?

Work backwards from the earliest binding stage, not from the date in the headline. Several entries in this index advertise one date and are actually gated by an earlier one. The Victoria University of Wellington scholarship closes on 15 September and stops giving out project access on 1 September. The UNESCO fellowship closes on 30 September and asks you to be with your National Commission two weeks before that. The Studienstiftung’s call is open for exactly fourteen days and needs your supervisor’s signature inside them. In each case the date that decides whether you can apply is not the date printed largest.

Read the eligibility line before the funding line. The most common way to lose an evening in this index is to read an amount, get interested, and discover a country list or an enrolment condition three screens later. This week that condition is a closed list of 83 nationalities on the UNESCO fellowship, a requirement to be enrolled at one particular Australian university on two of the summer programmes, twelve months of prior society membership on three Biochemical Society grants, and a requirement to carry out the work in Quebec on all three Fonds de recherche du Quebec competitions.

The CRG undergraduate and master student fellowships in Barcelona pay 700 euros a month for up to four months plus a return flight of up to 1,000 euros from outside Europe, across ten projects that include computational biology, protein language models and structural variant analysis, and each project stays open until the right candidate is found. You apply to the named supervisor directly, not through a portal. The Wellcome Early-Career Awards accept applications year round. Neither will ever appear in a closing-soon list, which is exactly why they are worth a Saturday morning.

Which life science funding deadlines close this week?

Eight close today, 31 August 2026: four Indian institute project posts at BRIC-inStem Bengaluru, BRIC-NCCS Pune, BRIC-NIPGR New Delhi and BRIC-THSTI Faridabad, the Amgen Scholars Australia Program at the University of Melbourne, the Oppenheimer Memorial Trust postgraduate scholarships in South Africa, and the Explorers Club Pathfinder and Rising Explorer grants at 6:00 pm US Eastern Time. Twelve more close on 1 September, including the CRI Irvington Postdoctoral Fellowship at USD 243,000 over three years, the BrightFocus Alzheimer’s Disease Research Postdoctoral Fellowship, both Heinrich Boell Stiftung scholarships for study in Germany, and the Carlsberg Foundation Reintegration Fellowships. Thirty-eight close by 15 September 2026 in total.

Are there any funded research opportunities I can still start applying for in September?

Yes, and the southern hemisphere is where they are. Five Australian and New Zealand summer research programmes have their 2027 dates printed now, while most northern-hemisphere schemes are between cycles. The Victoria University of Wellington Summer Research Scholarship pays a minimum tax-free NZD 8,000 for up to ten weeks and closes 15 September 2026. The Children’s Medical Research Institute summer scholarships in Sydney close 1 October and take undergraduates from first year upward. The University of Queensland 2027 Summer Research Program pays an AUD 3,000 grant for six weeks and the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute Vacation Internship pays up to AUD 500 a week, both closing 11 October 2026. Four of the five require you to be enrolled at that university or in that country already.

Can a non-Canadian apply for a Fonds de recherche du Quebec scholarship?

Yes. The default route requires Canadian citizenship or permanent residence with a valid RAMQ card, and the rules then state that an applicant who meets neither condition is still eligible to apply. For the master’s competition (CAD 20,000 a year, closing 1 October 2026) and the doctoral competition (CAD 25,000 a year, closing 29 September 2026) you submit proof of admission to a programme at a Quebec university or a consent form from your research supervisor. For the postdoctoral competition (CAD 45,000 a year, closing 8 October 2026) it is a consent form plus a letter of acceptance from your supervisor. In every case you must carry out the work in Quebec, and for the master’s and doctoral awards you cannot use the award for a cotutelle outside Quebec. All three close at 16:00 EST and none charges a fee. You may apply to only one FRQ training award programme per year.

Which of these fund computational biology or bioinformatics work?

Several of this week’s new entries. The CRG International PhD Programme in Barcelona, closing 22 November 2026, covers genomics, computational biology and health genomics, bioinformatics and machine learning applied to biology, offers up to 20 fully funded four-year employment contracts, and pays accommodation and flights for candidates invited to interview. The CRG undergraduate and master student fellowships, which stay open until each project is filled, include projects on protein language models and structural variant analysis at 700 euros a month. The UNESCO/Keizo Obuchi fellowship has an artificial intelligence stream covering ecosystem monitoring and responsible AI use in scientific research. In India, the BRIC-THSTI Junior Data Scientist post at Rs 50,000 a month closes 1 September. All three Fonds de recherche du Quebec competitions cover natural sciences, mathematics and engineering.

Why do 79 of these entries have no deadline date?

Because the funder did not print one, and we will not invent it. Some are genuinely open ended: the Wellcome Early-Career Awards state there are no deadlines and accept applications at any time, and the CRG undergraduate and master fellowships say each project stays open until the right candidate is found. Others print a recurring day and month with no year at all, which is normal for learned societies and for annual institutional schemes, and a date with no year is a date we would have to guess. Two Indian posts were dropped from this issue for a related reason: their closing dates are printed all in digits, as 11/09/2026 and 04-09-2026, where both components are twelve or less and the day and month order cannot be settled. In every case we print the funder’s own wording and link the page that holds the operative date.

How often is this list updated, and how far can I trust it?

We publish a roundup every week and add newly verified opportunities in between. Before this issue every live record was re-fetched from its funder’s page: 202 records were checked, 184 pages loaded successfully, seven closed because their dates had passed, and no stored deadline changed anywhere in the index. Twenty pages could not be fetched and those records were left exactly as they were, because a page that fails to load tells us nothing about whether an opportunity is open. Every new entry is read twice by two readers who never see each other’s work; disagreement about the deadline or the application page drops the record, and five records were dropped that way this week.
