Life Science PhD, Fellowship and Scholarship Deadlines: What Closes in August 2026

One hundred and thirty-five life science funding calls are open right now across seven regions. Fifteen of them close on 14 August 2026, four days from today, and nine of those fifteen are ICGEB Expression of Interest deadlines that gate a later full application. Every date here was read on the funder’s own website on 10 August 2026.

This is our weekly funding roundup for life scientists. Every entry was checked against the funding organisation’s own website on 10 August 2026. Nothing here comes from a scholarship aggregator, and the section on verification explains why that distinction is worth more than it sounds.

The index now holds 135 open calls: 41 in Europe, 31 global schemes with no single home country, 23 in North America, 11 in Africa, 11 across Asia and the Pacific, 9 in India and 9 in Latin America. Forty-six entries are new since last week’s issue, twenty-five of them added today, and 111 of the 135 place no citizenship condition on the applicant at all.

The number that matters most this week is smaller. Fifteen of these close on Friday. If you read only one section, read the next one.

Who can apply: Postdoctoral researchers. Level 1 basic scientists must have received their degree no more than 18 months before the deadline. What closes first?

Fifteen deadlines fall on 14 August 2026. Twenty-seven close within a fortnight and thirty-five before the end of the month.

• 14 August 2026: nine ICGEB fellowships close their Expression of Interest stage at 23:59 CET. On the same day, the Damon Runyon Fellowship Award closes at 4:00 pm Eastern Time, the Burroughs Wellcome Career Awards at the Scientific Interface close their letter of intent at 3:00 pm Eastern, the Alzheimer’s Association Research Fellowship for All closes its letter of intent at 5:00 pm Eastern, the Company of Biologists JCS-FocalPlane Training Grants close, CONICET’s Argentine doctorate completion fellowships close, and a BRIC-inStem project post in Bengaluru closes.
• 15 August 2026: the HPI at UCT Research School fellowships, which pay ZAR 262,200 a year for a PhD and are open to students from anywhere on the African continent, and a second BRIC-inStem post paying Rs 42,000 a month plus HRA.
• 19 and 20 August 2026: the RCB Faridabad Project-JRF walk-in interview in Faridabad, both Novo Nordisk Foundation committee postdoctoral fellowships at 2:00 pm Copenhagen time, and the Hillel Friedland Postdoctoral Fellowship in cancer genomics at the Sydney Brenner Institute in Johannesburg.
• 21 and 24 August 2026: CONICET’s co-financed doctoral fellowships, the QIMR Berghofer International PhD Scholarships in Brisbane, and three EMBL Grenoble postdoctoral fellowships in cryo-electron microscopy, cryo-electron tomography and synchrotron imaging at 23:59 CET.

Two warnings attach to that list. The nine ICGEB dates are not the deadline they appear to be, which the next section explains. And the Damon Runyon, Burroughs Wellcome and Alzheimer’s Association entries are all first-stage gates too: each opens a full application that is due later and cannot be reached without clearing 14 August first.

Why do nine ICGEB deadlines fall on the same day?

Because ICGEB runs nine separate fellowship schemes on one shared calendar, and 14 August is the close of the Expression of Interest, not of the application. The full application is due 30 September 2026, and you cannot submit one until ICGEB has invited you on the strength of the earlier form. Miss Friday and the September date is unreachable, even though September is the date that looks like the deadline.

The nine schemes differ almost entirely by nationality, and several of them exclude the audience that most often applies to ICGEB. Only the four Arturo Falaschi schemes are open to nationals of any ICGEB Member State, which includes India. The other five are restricted to named countries. This is the table to read before you start a form.

One rule catches Indian applicants in particular, and it is easy to miss. You may not hold an ICGEB fellowship in your own country of origin unless you have been working abroad for at least the last three years. An India-based Indian national therefore applies to Trieste or Cape Town, not to the New Delhi component, however convenient New Delhi looks. The schemes and their component laboratories are listed on the ICGEB fellowships hub.

Which of these can a bachelor’s or master’s student apply to?

Eight of the 135 entries are aimed specifically at undergraduates, and another 62 are open to more than one career stage. That is a genuinely thin slice, and it is worth knowing where it sits, because the large national fellowships almost all start at PhD or postdoctoral level.

New this week: the Victoria Finnerty Undergraduate Travel Awards from the Genetics Society of America, closing 17 September 2026, where the student is the applicant and the only conditions are undergraduate GSA membership and Drosophila research presented at the Annual Drosophila Research Conference. Alongside it, Sigma Xi Grants in Aid of Research funds undergraduates at USD 500 to USD 5,000 with no membership required, and the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Undergraduate Research Program pays a USD 7,000 stipend with room and board covered, though its 2026 round has already run and it admits international students only if they are enrolled full-time at a United States university.

For a master’s student, the Indian institutional posts are the most actionable entries in the whole list. Two BRIC-inStem project posts in Bengaluru close on 14 and 15 August, paying Rs 37,000 and Rs 42,000 a month plus HRA, and both adverts state in terms that the application fee is nil. The RCB Faridabad Project-JRF closes on 19 August as a walk-in interview at 9:30 am, paying Rs 37,000 a month plus 27 per cent HRA. All three require an Indian national eligibility test such as CSIR-UGC NET, and all three are institutional posts rather than portable awards.

Two more entry points are worth planning for rather than applying to today. The ICGEB Short-term PhD Fellowships accept a BSc (Honours) for Trieste and Cape Town, which is unusually early for a funded international placement. The Institute of Science and Technology Austria PhD programme, which closes 8 January 2027, admits BSc holders directly and charges no application fee.

Which of these are closed to international applicants?

Twenty of the 135 entries are restricted by nationality or immigration status, and several of them are recommended widely without the caveat attached. Read this before you spend an evening on a form.

The United States. The NCI predoctoral and postdoctoral fellowships, F31 and F32, require United States citizenship, non-citizen national status or lawful permanent residence at the time of award, and the National Institutes of Health states plainly that foreign nationals on student visas are not eligible. The same applies to the NSF Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Biology and, new this week, to the Hertz Fellowship, which is worth up to USD 250,000 over five years and is open only to citizens and permanent residents.

The Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans, also new this week and worth up to USD 90,000, are a subtler case and the distinction matters. The bar is not citizenship, it is immigration status: you must be an immigrant to the United States or the child of immigrants, and one of the qualifying routes is having graduated from both high school and college in the United States, which admits people who are neither citizens nor green card holders. A student applying from India on a fresh student visa is not eligible. The application itself is free, which the programme states in so many words.

Nationality by design. Five of the nine ICGEB schemes are restricted to named countries, as the table above sets out. Chile’s Fondecyt postdoctoral competition requires Chilean nationality or permanent residence. The Commonwealth PhD Scholarships remain restricted to 18 least developed countries and vulnerable states, and India is not among them; Indian students are eligible for the Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships, which is a different scheme on a different page. The Mandela Rhodes Scholarship is open only to citizens of an African country, and the DSTI-NRF Honours scholarship added this week is for South African citizens and permanent residents only.

Language and residence bars do the same work quietly. Both CONICET doctoral categories accept applicants regardless of nationality, and then require that the work plan be written in Spanish, which excludes most of this audience just as firmly. The co-financed category adds a second bar: you must already hold the endorsement of a counterpart institution from CONICET’s published list, so you cannot apply cold. Argentina’s rules are not the obstacle. Spanish is.

Against all of that, 111 of the 135 entries place no citizenship condition on the applicant. The three EMBL Grenoble postdoctoral fellowships closing 24 August are open to any nationality subject only to the standard mobility rule, which is that you must not have spent more than twelve months in France in the three years before the deadline.

Why do so many funding listings turn out to be wrong?

Four kinds of misleading listing were live somewhere while this issue was compiled, and this week produced a clear example of each.

The printed date belongs to a stage you cannot reach. This is the most dangerous error in the genre because the page looks open and the date parses cleanly. The PhRMA Foundation advertises predoctoral and postdoctoral fellowships in drug discovery worth USD 30,000 and USD 60,000 a year, with a full application deadline of 26 August 2026 printed on every scheme page and no banner saying otherwise. It is unreachable: the entry point is a letter of intent that closed on 15 April 2026, and only holders invited by 1 July may use the August date. The nine ICGEB deadlines this week are the same shape read correctly, with the binding stage surfaced instead of the decorative one.

A fee one step removed still costs you the award. This list excludes any opportunity carrying a fee to apply, without exception and regardless of how legitimate the organisation is. Three good schemes were dropped this week on that rule. The ASPET travel awards cover pharmacology and drug metabolism and even reimburse up to USD 1,000 of airfare for applicants in developing countries, but the application is the abstract submission, and ASPET’s own meeting page prices an abstract processing fee that members merely get USD 100 off. HKUST advertises a research postgraduate stipend of HK$340,800 a year on a page that also prints an application fee of HK$180. The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology charges 5,000 JPY with no waivers. In each case the fee sits below the eligibility section, which is exactly why a quick scan misses it.

The page contradicts itself, and the stale half is usually the one under the heading. The Genetics Society of America printed one date beside its apply button and a different, older one under a heading marked Deadline. FENS keeps a status widget from 2023 on grant pages its own index lists as open. The clearest case this week was RSIF-PASET, which serves a call at a web address ending in the words “is now open” whose body says the status is closed and gives a deadline of October 2021. A page title is not a status, a banner is not a status, and a web address is certainly not a status.

Schemes that have quietly stopped. TWAS, which many students in the Global South apply through, currently has no open PhD or postdoctoral fellowship at all: its own pages mark every partner scheme closed, and TWAS-DBT and TWAS-CSIR both state that no call will open in 2026. The Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World has suspended both its PhD and its early career fellowships for lack of funding. Canada’s Banting and Vanier awards are discontinued. The International Society for Neurochemistry retired its CAEN scheme in 2025 and still publishes 71,000 characters of CAEN guidelines below the sentence announcing the retirement, which is why the two replacement schemes appear in this list and CAEN does not. Every one of these is still recommended by aggregators.

How is this list verified?

Every fact in this article comes from the funding organisation’s own domain, fetched on 10 August 2026. Aggregators are used only to notice that an opportunity might exist. We then find the funder’s page and read the deadline, the eligibility and the funding there. If we cannot find an official page, the opportunity does not appear, with no caveat and no partial entry.

The reason is a near-miss from the week this list was built. A search summary stated confidently that the next ICGEB round would open in January 2027 with a March 2027 deadline. ICGEB’s own page, read at the same moment, showed an open round closing on 14 August 2026. Both sentences exist on ICGEB’s site; the summary had simply quoted the paragraph about the next round and presented it as the current one. A student who trusted it would have missed a deadline two weeks away, twice over, since the same thing is true again this week.

Each new entry this week was verified twice and by different means. A regional researcher read the funder’s page and extracted the record. Then, independently, every record was re-fetched from scratch and put through three mechanical checks: the funder’s domain has to be on an allowlist or be an institutional domain, the page has to be free of any fee to apply and of the standard scam signals, and the deadline’s own text has to be findable, character for character, in the page we actually downloaded. Every entry that reached this page passed all three. Four further records that passed every check on their merits were still held back, because the host they sit on has not yet been through our own confirmation step, and we would rather publish four fewer entries than relax that.

We also refuse to print a date we cannot stand behind. Fifty-five of the 135 entries carry no date, and that is deliberate. Where a funder prints a day and month with no year, which is normal for learned societies whose deadline is the same every year, we print exactly what they printed. The Hertz Foundation says “Late October 2026” and we say “Late October 2026”. Where a numeric date could be read two ways, we do not guess. Where a funder points at a per-course or per-university deadline, we say the deadline varies and send you to the page that holds it. A vague but honest answer costs you five minutes. A confidently wrong date costs you the application.

What should I do before the deadline?

Four practical notes that apply across most of this list.

Find the first stage before you value anything. A page with a key dates table almost always has a stage above the date you found, and that earlier stage is the one that locks you out. Nine entries this week close an expression of interest, three close a letter of intent, and in every case the later, larger-looking date is unreachable without the earlier one. Before you plan around any deadline, scroll up.

References are part of the deadline, and sometimes they are the deadline. The GSA Victoria Finnerty award needs the recommendation letter uploaded by the same 17 September date as the application, through a separate link emailed to your referee, so the referee has to be lined up before you submit. QIMR Berghofer requires three referee reports to arrive before its 24 August closing date and says chasing them is the applicant’s job. Ask your referees now.

Someone else may have to act before you can submit at all. The UCT postdoctoral fellowships closing 15 September are submitted by your intended principal investigator, not by you, so the conversation has to happen first. Mexico’s Secihti requires the host institution’s legal representative to sign an acceptance letter. RIKEN requires a host researcher to be secured in advance. Chile’s Fondecyt makes the pattern unusually visible: the applicant must send the proposal for institutional sponsorship by 27 August while sponsorship itself closes on 3 September, and the earlier of those two dates is yours. If you are applying through an institution, ask its research office for the internal date before you plan around the public one.

Join the society a year before you need it. Several of the travel and lab-visit grants in this list require membership held for a set period before the deadline: the Biochemical Society wants twelve months, or six on a multiyear plan, and the two new International Society for Neurochemistry schemes want twenty-four continuous months, with a single lapsed year disqualifying you. Dues are small. The waiting period is what locks people out, and the only fix for it is time.

The September date is the one that looks like the deadline and it is the one you cannot use, because ICGEB only invites full applications from candidates whose Expression of Interest has cleared. The same structure sits behind the letter of intent used by the Damon Runyon Fellowship Award, the Burroughs Wellcome Career Awards at the Scientific Interface and the Alzheimer’s Association Research Fellowship for All, all three of which also close on 14 August. Are there any fellowships an undergraduate can apply to?

Eight of the 135, and they come almost entirely from learned societies and institutes rather than national funders. The Genetics Society of America runs the Victoria Finnerty Undergraduate Travel Awards, closing 17 September 2026, where the student applies and the conditions are undergraduate GSA membership and Drosophila research presented at the Annual Drosophila Research Conference. Sigma Xi Grants in Aid of Research fund undergraduates at USD 500 to USD 5,000 with no membership requirement and no fee. The Society for Molecular Biology and Evolution runs an undergraduate travel and mentoring award needing no membership at all. The ICGEB Short-term PhD Fellowships accept a BSc (Honours) for their Trieste and Cape Town laboratories, which is the earliest entry point to a funded international placement in this list.

Do any of these charge an application fee?

None of them, because any opportunity with a fee to apply is excluded without exception. That rule cost this issue three genuinely good entries. The ASPET travel awards, which cover pharmacology and drug metabolism and reimburse up to USD 1,000 of airfare for applicants in developing countries, are applied for by submitting a conference abstract, and that abstract carries a processing fee. HKUST prints an application fee of HK$180 for research postgraduate programmes on the same page that advertises a HK$340,800 annual stipend. The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology charges 5,000 JPY and states it offers no waivers. A society membership fee is a different thing and does not disqualify a scheme, though we always say what it costs and whether there is a waiting period. A request for money to apply, a demand for your bank or Aadhaar details before any selection decision, and a contact address that is only a messaging number are the three clearest signs a scholarship listing is not genuine.

Why do some entries have no deadline date?

Because the funder did not print one, and we will not invent it. Fifty-five of the 135 entries are undated. Some are recurring calls that print a day and month with no year, which is the norm for learned societies: the two International Society for Neurochemistry schemes print 31 October, Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds prints 1 February, 1 June and 1 October, and the University of Auckland prints four annual rounds against 1 February, 1 May, 1 August and 1 November. Some are genuinely rolling, including the IUPAB general bursaries, which ask only that you apply at least three months before your event, and FAPESP’s Brazilian fellowships, which accept applications at any time of year. Others defer to a per-course or per-university date, as the Australian Government Research Training Program does because every participating university runs its own rounds. In each case we print the funder’s own wording and link you to the page that holds the operative date.

How often is this list updated, and how far can I trust it?

We publish a roundup every week and add newly verified opportunities in between, which is how the index went from 33 entries on 31 July to 135 today. Before this issue, all 116 existing records were re-fetched from their funders’ pages: no deadline had moved anywhere in the store, and five records closed because their dates had simply passed. Five could not be fetched at all, and those were left exactly as they were, because a page that fails to load tells us nothing about whether an opportunity is open and we will not close a live call on a failed request. Every record carries the date it was last verified so you can judge its freshness yourself. Always open the official link before you apply: the funder’s page is the authority and this page is a signpost to it.
